San Rocco, Wayfarer’s Path

(by train from Milan 7.20 am arrival in Bellano 8.29 am / Bellano 9.00 am-Dorio 9.09 am) Return: train in Colico 4.15 or 5.15 pm, arrival in Milan 5.40 or 6.40 pm

We will walk along the “Viandante”, a panoramic path used over the centuries to connect Milan to Switzerland.

The route offers splendid views of Lake Como, passing through picturesque villages, ancient courtyards and ruins, small mountain churches, terraced vineyards and olive groves. Deserved stops will allow us to contemplate and photograph these breathtaking landscapes.

Programme of the day

From Dorio we reach Mandonico, a nucleus of rustic houses built in local stone where time seems to have stood still. The route now becomes spectacular and the mule track quickly gains altitude until we reach the chapel of San Rocco (484 m), in an extraordinarily panoramic position. At altitude we pass above the small lake of Piona, on the slopes of Monte Sparese (566 m) where we stop for a picnic lunch. We then continue downhill on a dirt road to Posallo (420 m). From here we cross the Perlino stream and then take the path that climbs steeply to a small church, also known as the church of San Rocco (15th century) and descend to Colico, where we take the train back to Dorio.

What to bring for the hike

Hiking shoes or boots, water, packed lunch, optional trekking poles, rain and wind protection.

NB: You will find a few fountains along the route where you can fill your water bottle.
