Excursion to the super panoramic Monte Grona with overnight stay at Rifugio Menaggio and lunch at Rif. La Canua

The 360 degree panorama over the three branches of Lake Como, Lake Piano and Lake Lugano, the Alps and the Lario Pre-Alps make Monte Grona a TOP vantage point.

Possibility of CAR POOLING from Lecco: whoever is more comfortable can be in Lecco Parking Ezio Galli at 09:15. We leave a few cars here and drive up to Varenna. We take ourselves to the ferry embarkation point, walk 2 steps to Varenna and at 10.15 we ferry to Menaggio (with the cars) and then meet up with the others at the meeting point.
Day 1:
From the starting point, we ascend along paths enjoying beautiful views of the middle of the lake until we reach the Rifugio Menaggio, where a splendid panorama opens up. We have a short lunch (packed or buying sandwiches at the refuge). We lighten our rucksacks and continue on our way to the mythical Monte Grona. Among the peaks I have reached, I would say that the view from here is unrivalled by the other mountains of the Lario (my personal opinion!). We contemplate the sunset over 3 lakes: Como, Lugano, Piano. Along a ridge (not particularly exposed, only a few metres may bother those suffering from vertigo) we continue on to the sober yet splendid Church of Sant’Amate, the patron saint of animals. We descend to Rif. Menaggio, and wait for evening to fall so that we can sit down and enjoy a convivial dinner with our fellow adventurers. We sleep in the hut on bunk beds.
Day 2:
After a good breakfast and coffee, we set off. We head back to Sant’Amate and then on to the summit of Monte Bregagnino (1930m). The view from this summit is magnificent, embracing much of the Alpine arc and Lake Como in its extension. We descend just below this peak, to the La Canua refuge, run by Mato Grosso, where a well-deserved lunch awaits us! Along a traverse path, never losing sight of the lake, a panorama that never ceases to amaze, we reach our cars. Expected return at 5 p.m.
What to bring:
-Sheet or light sleeping bag
- Useful chopsticks
- A torch can be handy at night
- A mobile phone powerbank can be useful.
- Dress in layers, hiking boots or shoes (see clothing photo at the bottom of the page)

Does not include: lunch on Saturday (we can buy sandwiches at the refuge/ packed lunch)/ lunch at the Canua refuge on Sunday (I am still waiting for confirmation from them on the cost) you can opt for packed lunch
